Legislative Hero and Community Prevention Partner of the Year Recognized at Statewide Conference

Prevent Child Abuse Iowa recognized two community leaders who have put their hand in prevention by supporting child protection and family support and demonstrated collaboration with community partners at the Child Abuse Prevention and Family Support Conference in Ankeny on May 7.

Senator Jim Carlin received the Child Advocate Award and Suzanne Mineck with Mid-Iowa Health Foundation received the Community Prevention Partner of the Year Award.

Senator Jim Carlin (Sioux City, IA) was honored as a Child Advocate due to his leadership in the Children’s Mental Health Bill and the Mandatory Reporter Bill. Sen. Carlin went above and beyond by keeping the children and families in Iowa at the forefront of his work. The Children’s Mental Health Bill establishes the first-ever statewide mental health system for children, and lays the groundwork for a system that will remove stigma associated with mental illness, building hope for families that need additional support and resources for their children. The Mandatory Reporter Bill solidifies training standards for 400 mandatory reporters across Iowa, strengthening the protective system for Iowa kids.

Suzanne Mineck was honored as the Community Prevention Partner of the Year. With more than 15 years of experience in the field of philanthropy, she is a recognized expert in non-profit leadership and fund development and has extensive experience in board management, project facilitation, and strategic planning. Prior to joining Mid-Iowa Health Foundation, she was a consultant with The Stelter Company where she facilitated seminars, presented to national audiences, and provided one-on-one consulting for non-profit organizations.

In the spirit of this year’s conference theme, “Your Hand in Prevention”, the Child Advocate Award and Prevention Partner of the Year Award recognize the collaborative effort it takes for communities to create safer, more nurturing environments for children. PCA Iowa thanks the award winners for their leadership and dedication in strengthening Iowa families.
