August 2024 – Sharon’s Shorts

One day last week, I came home after a tough day at work, feeling drained and dreading the usual pile of mail waiting for me. Bills and junk mail were the last things I wanted to deal with. But amidst the clutter, there was a delightful surprise – a card from one of my amazing friends in Washington. She wrote, “I saw this card and it made me laugh out loud and memories of you flooded my head! I miss you and you should move closer!” Instantly, my mood lifted as I reminisced about our fun adventures together. I haven’t seen her since 2016 when her youngest was only six months old. Her thoughtful and funny card transported me back in time.

Facilitating friendships and mutual support are strategies and everyday actions that help children and families build protective factors. Social connections are one of the five key protective factors that strengthen families, promote optimal child development, and reduce the risk of child abuse and neglect. Think about the special people in your life who have made a lasting connection. How do you stay in touch with them? When was the last time you reached out just to say hi or thank you?

Here’s to unexpected surprises that bring us joy!
