A Room of Heroes

My mind was racing as I sat down to write this month’s newsletter. I’m still reflecting on the many insights, powerful messages, and moments of inspiration from the annual Child Abuse Prevention Conference on April 29 and 30. The planning committee truly outdid themselves! Their time, energy, and thoughtful selection of the theme and speakers made a lasting impact, and I’m deeply grateful.

Even with so many great sessions to choose from, my thoughts keep returning to the Community Heroes Award Ceremony. Each recipient moved me deeply. They were all incredibly deserving, yet what struck me most was their humility. Each one turned the spotlight outward, thanking everyone in the room for being prevention heroes. They reminded us that this work isn’t done alone. Everyone in attendance plays a vital role. Their kindness and encouragement were powerful.

Prevention work doesn’t make headlines. It’s not glamorous or easy. Often, it’s heartbreaking especially when we can’t connect a family to the support they need. But it’s also deeply rewarding. There’s nothing like the smile from a once-shy child, or the hug from a parent who finally feels like they can breathe again. Those moments remind us why we do what we do.

As we now turn our attention to Prevent Child Abuse Iowa’s 50th birthday celebration, the conference theme, “Stronger Together,” rings especially true. That phrase captures the spirit of the organization. PCA Iowa was born from a grassroots effort led by dedicated volunteers and community members who believed in a better future for children and families. Their vision laid the foundation for everything we are today.

You’ve been an important part of this journey over the past 50 years, and we invite you to celebrate with us! Join us on June 22 for a free, fun, family-friendly event that honors our shared commitment to prevention. It’s a chance to reflect, reconnect, and make joyful memories together.
