June 2024 – Sharon’s shorts

June marks the celebration of Father’s Day, a time dedicated to honoring the men who have profoundly shaped our lives. While not always receiving the fanfare as Mother’s Day, its importance is no less profound. Fathers often serve as protectors, providers, mentors, role models, coaches, and they shape our lives in countless ways.

For me, my dad was the embodiment of selflessness and community spirit. He was my first teacher in the importance of giving back. My dad served on the small-town volunteer fire department, was an usher and superintendent of Sunday School at our church, elected to City Council, and always helped cooking or grilling at the annual long-term care facility fundraiser. Despite our family’s modest means, I never felt deprived growing up. He taught my brother and me to recognize our blessings, emphasizing that even though we had little, other families had less. We had our health, faith, and each other – gifts more precious than money or wealth.

This spirit of helping and empowering others is integral to the first part of PCA Iowa’s mission statement: We build meaningful connections. Our work is driven by a commitment to empower children, families, and communities. These connections, whether between a teacher and a student or a community coming together after a disaster, are vital. Just as my father’s actions demonstrated the power of community and service, PCA Iowa strives to foster connections that uplift and strengthen.

This Father’s Day, let us honor the fathers who have shaped us and continue to build connections that empower and inspire.

Celebrating all dads,
