The countdown to PCA Iowa’s 50th birthday party is officially on! The tents are booked, the ice cream and sweet treats are in the queue, and my office is starting to look like a craft store thanks to all the supplies for our flower-making fun. Volunteer shifts are filling fast, backpacks are standing by for their magical sponsorship-powered transformations, and Justin is putting the final touches on an original song. Yes, you read that right. A custom song written just for this event. This party has been a year in the making, and I truly can’t wait to celebrate with YOU!
Recently, during a radio interview promoting the big day, I was asked: Why a birthday party? Why not a formal event or big fundraiser? Something more traditional for a milestone like this? It’s a fair question, especially when you consider that the entire event is free. In a world where nonprofits are often pinching pennies and stretching grants like taffy, choosing to throw a free celebration might seem a little, well, unconventional.
But here’s the thing: at PCA Iowa our mission is all about building meaningful connections. Real, joyful, heart-filling connections between children, families, and communities. What a better way to foster those connections than with a birthday party? A big, joyful, inclusive, memory-making kind of party!
We want families to come together, laugh together, dance together, and just be together, without the burden of cost. We chose Reiman Gardens because it’s not only beautiful, accessible, but it invites wonder, play and the kind of nature that rejuvenates the soul. Whether you’re meeting a superhero, tossing bags with an Iowa State athlete, or just dancing to Justin’s new hit song, the whole day is about togetherness.
Maybe it’s simple. Maybe it’s just personal. I grew up in a “have not” family. Those spontaneous outings and fun adventures other kids had? I didn’t. So, I know how powerful it can be when families are given a chance to make joyful memories together, without worrying about the price tag. Also? I love a good birthday party! Always have.
But more than anything, this celebration reflects what PCA Iowa has stood for over the past 50 years: ensuring that every child is loved, supported, respected, and valued. That’s not just worth celebrating, it’s worth going all out for!
So, I hope to see you on June 22 at Reiman Gardens. Come say hi! And if you can’t be there in person, consider donating to help make the day magical for another family. Just one request: if you catch me mid-dance, please join in!
Busting out my best birthday hat,
